Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the censorship procedure.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release
However, some conservative pundits and former President allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, broader discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued following the release, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that came before the legislative vote to pass a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy binders of files that contained little new information.
