Each time a major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
